Some feelings resist language, and Vincentia Esinam Anthony, known as Ese, paints precisely those. A Ghanaian-born, UK-based self-taught abstract artist, she works through colours, shapes, and textures to express “feelings that words cannot always capture,” exploring emotion, identity, memory, and human experience while leaving viewers free to discover their own interpretations.

Her inspiration comes from nature, everyday experience, memory, and emotion. Growing up in Ghana and living in the UK have shaped how Ese understands identity, belonging, and personal growth, and she paints intuitively, letting emotions and ideas guide each composition rather than planning it in advance.

Among the artists she admires is Ethiopian-born abstract artist Julie Mehretu, whose expressive layers and visual storytelling speak to her. Ghanaian artists Serge Attukwei Clottey and Ibrahim Mahama also inspire her through their exploration of identity, history, and unconventional materials. Their creativity, she says, encourages her to develop her own artistic voice.

Ese experiments with colour, texture, layering, and expressive mark-making to build emotional depth. These techniques let her work freely and communicate feeling beyond realistic representation.

When inspiration fades, she steps away from painting to reflect, observe nature, or listen to music. She believes creativity needs patience, and finds that moments of stillness often bring fresh perspectives.

If her artwork could speak, it would say: “Look beyond what you see, embrace who you are, and remember your story matters.” She wants viewers to connect with their own emotions and find personal meaning in her paintings.

For Ese, participating in the Anadu Art Fair represents growth and a chance to share her artistic journey. Professionally, it connects her with artists, collectors, and new audiences. As a self-taught Ghanaian artist, she values the platform for cultural exchange, creative connections, and artistic development.
