Flourish Oyinlola is a Nigerian contemporary visual artist based in Ibadan, working primarily in oil on canvas. His practice leans on geometric and fragmented forms to explore identity, memory, resilience, and cultural consciousness – themes that recur across his work as he pieces together broken structures into something coherent.
His creative process draws directly from the world around him: everyday experience, human emotion, cultural observation, and the stories of the people he encounters. These moments don’t stay as raw material for long – he works to transform them into visual narratives, turning the ordinary into something with lasting shape.
His influences span both African and international contemporary artists, with a particular pull toward those who have developed distinctive visual languages of their own and use their art to communicate meaningful ideas. It’s less a matter of style borrowed directly than of a shared commitment to art as a vehicle for something worth saying.
Materially, Oyinlola works primarily in oil on canvas, paired with the geometric and fragmented forms that define his visual identity. Oil gives him room to explore depth, texture, and colour, while the geometric structure he builds into each piece supplies its distinctive character – the two working together to shape both the look and the meaning of the finished work.
When creative blocks set in, he doesn’t try to push through them. Instead, he steps back, giving himself time to observe, reflect, and take in new experiences, trusting that inspiration tends to arrive from ordinary moments rather than forced effort.
Asked what his artwork would say if it could speak, Oyinlola describes wanting it to encourage viewers to look beyond the surface – to reflect on their own experiences and connect with the emotions and stories held within the work.
Participating in the Anadu Art Fair, he says, is an opportunity to share his practice with a wider audience, connect with collectors and fellow creatives, and further establish his work within the contemporary art space – another step in a practice built on turning fragments into something whole.
