In Igbo tradition, “Ijé Àwèlè” encompasses both physical and spiritual journeys – representing travels that yield positive outcomes and life’s path filled with meaningful, beautiful experiences. This phrase serves primarily as a blessing bestowed upon travelers, wishing them success and fulfillment on their journey.
In this thoughtful conceptual work, the artist has created a visual interpretation of “Ijé Àwèlè” through carefully chosen symbolic elements:
Fruits as Fruitfulness: The abundant strawberries, citrus, represent the “fruitful” aspect of the blessing – symbolising prosperity, abundance, and the positive outcomes one hopes to achieve through their journey. These vibrant fruits embody the richness and sweetness that can result from life’s travels.
Footprints as Journey: The decorative Footprint represent the physical act of traveling – each step taken on one’s path. The intricate patterns adorning the footprints suggest that every journey carries personal significance and cultural meaning.
This artwork transforms the traditional Igbo blessing into a contemporary visual prayer – celebrating both the journey itself and the fruitful outcomes it may bring.
