Description
This is a sequel of The Story Behind The Mask – a story about a beautiful, happy, an easy-going lady, Yemisi Olanaja – who despite her struggles always never seized to smile. This sequel is however hinged to Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical theory metaphor of performance and identity management in social life. The theory posits that all individuals are actors on a stage, constantly performing roles to an audience. The “mask” represents the public persona people adopt to be accepted and to effectively navigate social interactions.
In essence, Goffman’s theory suggests that we are always wearing a mask to some extent; the “true self” is rarely a fixed entity but rather a dynamic effect of the social scenes we participate in. The story of the mask highlights the emotional and psychological effort required to maintain this social performance, especially when one’s private reality (backstage) is difficult or painful.
